There is something about summer that makes me smile. I love all of the seasons. Particularly, I simply marvel in watching them transition. But summer? Well, it has a unique allure. Perhaps, it is because summer beckons us outdoors, out of routines, out of habit, out of the familiar, out of false ceilings. Summer is a season of discovery... adventure... new heights. I smile at the memories of summers before... but I positively beam with anticipation for those yet to come! Summer... I run to you with open arms, swept up in your embrace... spinning round, feet off the ground! So glad you're here...
Let me count the ways! I love....
Evening storms rumbling through the darkness...flashes of lightning punctuating the night as rain streams against parched earth.
Glowing bonfires warming hearts in their blaze... roasted marshmallows perfected with patience to golden, melted goodness.
Road trips designed to discover new destinations... spontaneity allowed to seize the moment and experience the unplanned.
Windows rolled down, inviting the breeze to pour in... familiar music notched a little louder, uninhibiting voices to join freely in melody.
Blackberries plucked warm, glistening, plump from the vine... sweet jam spread generously on tender bread drawn from the oven.
Fire-engine red tomatoes, with meaty substance, layered in slices on a plate... cucumbers green and white pickling in an old family crock.
Wild daisies and black-eyed Susans gathered in clusters of yellow and white on the creek bank... the current rushing after summer rain.
Fireworks showered over gentle, lapping waves against soft, sandy shore... colorful displays reflecting in the mirror of the ocean's night canvas.
Red and white stripes held high by small, excited hands... steam engines puffing and community friends waving on parade as candy tosses to the sidewalk.
Lingering talks in hushed tones carried into the wee hours... shoulders touching, fingers interlocked, dreams and desires revealed.
Squealing children refreshed in shimmering pool fountains... tall, frosty glasses of lemonade waiting under umbrella shades.
Rich, smooth, ice cream ribbons churned thick and decadent... little boys lounged back to back with sticky smiles.
Mingled laughter and chatter of old friends and new acquaintances gathered on the lawn... barbecue, potato salad, buttered corn, and fresh-cracked melons circling red and white coolers.
Cool, cotton quilts drawn about sun-kissed shoulders... a starry sky spans above dancing fireflies... as the swing slows to a stop.
Summer. It's so good to see you again.
