Thinking of Mary cradling her sweet baby boy as this Christmas season begins. I wrote this a couple of years ago.
Wasn't it just yesterday
When I first drew you close?
In that one miraculous moment
Your life began and everything changed.
In that instant you filled my heart
With all that is goodness, all that is joy,
All that is peace, all that is love.
Wasn't it just yesterday
When the warmth of your breath
Was but a whisper on my skin?
I closed my eyes
Lowering my cheek to your head
Savoring the caress of such silky wisps of hair.
Wasn't it just yesterday
When I feared these moments were far too fleeting?
I drew in the smell of your skin,
The soft sound of your swallow
The smooth, flawless skin of your sweet lips.
Wasn't it just yesterday
That time stood still
As I memorized the feeling of
Your fragile fingers wrapped tightly about mine
And rejoiced in the glimmers of
First smiles and giggles as you slept?
Wasn't it just yesterday
That I drank in your very essence
My mind overcome with wonder and awe
My heart bursting with pure adoration?
Oh, my baby boy, wasn't it just yesterday?
Wasn't it just yesterday
That heaven opened wide and
Let me hold You for a time?
A gift to the whole world as none had ever known
Before... or after.
Wasn't it just yesterday
That the animals bowed before You
Where in this humble barn we would rest?
The people of Bethlehem sleep
And yet how the earth doth rejoice!
Wasn't it just yesterday
That the very angels of Your heavenly home
Sang Your lullaby in the night sky
As the star shone brightly to lead the way?
Wasn't it just yesterday
That the wise men brought offering to You?
The shepherds left their flocks to worship You
As Joseph and I stood in utter amazement.
Wasn't it just yesterday
When You changed my life with Yours
When You changed the world with Your sacrifice
When you were but an infant, and yet a king?
The King of all kings
The Great I Am
And yet my sleeping, precious, most beloved child.
Oh, my baby Jesus, wasn't it just yesterday?
From my heart,
Susan
